Improvisation sounds like some kind of procedure. Like, "I'm going to the doctor to have an improvisation done."
-Forrest Kinney
When people think of "improvisation," the next word they usually think is "jazz." Or maybe acting.
But this is limiting.
If we consider improvisation as simply a spontaneous act...one that takes pre-existing material and recombines it in new ways...then, don't we all improvise? Like, pretty much all the time?
When you talk, you improvise the words. When kids play, they improvise with their toys or games. When you interact with difficult people, you improvise your next move.
When children are allowed to improvise, in life and music, wonderful things happen. The same for adults. We find our creative voice and discover new things.
Don't become preoccupied with the right answers. Let's cherish our natural gift of improvisation.
Improvise. Create. Discover.
And don't forget to have fun.
