You hear the word "resilience" a lot these days. But what does it mean?
I think the best definition is "focus under stress."
But, do we teach a student to become resilient by piling the stress on? In the form of a demanding workload and a busy schedule?
I think it's more complex than that.
Focus under stress. You can pick that definition apart.
First, there's developing focus. Learning to become less distracted. Learning to focus on one thing at a time rather than multitasking. Learning to break a problem down into smaller parts to focus on one at a time.
And then there's the stress component. Understanding that stress is a bodily response to outside conditions. And that the causes of stress are often within our control, too.
When you break the definition apart like that, it suddenly becomes clear how to teach resilience.
All that's left is to go out there and teach it.
