Practicing Practice

There's something more important than practicing.

It's practicing practicing.

No, that's not a typo...

What I mean is practicing the act of practicing. It's a very "meta" concept, but an essential one.

It's not enough to just make the time to practice. Every day, we must refine the process of practicing. Evaluating what went well and what didn't go well so we can try to be even 1% better tomorrow.

When we do it right, we not only grow our skills, but we boost our ability to acquire skills faster.

So, how do you do this? It's pretty straightforward.

Before you practice, write down some goals and write how you're going to accomplish them. Be specific!

Practice.

And then after you practice, evaluate how it went. Did you accomplish your goals? If not, why? What could you have done better? What went well?

Then, write what you'll improve upon in your practice process tomorrow.

Do this every day for a week, and you'll be floored at how much faster you progress. In music, or anything that requires building skill.

Give it a try, come back, and let us know what happens.

Never miss a blog post!

For parents, students, and anyone else who believes that music can and should be a meaningful part of everyone's life.

When 2 + 2 = 10

When it comes to practicing, most people don’t get how time works. People think the amount of practice time is most important. Rather than the frequency. Logic tells us this: Practicing 5 minutes for six days would be the same as practicing 30 minutes for one day. It adds up to the same total minutes, so the benefits are the same.
