Over time, it's become harder and harder to pay attention.
A great example of this is the 10-second buttons featured on most video players.
You know...the buttons that allow you to jump 10 seconds forward or backward in the video.
But let's face it...we don't have much use for tapping forward 10 seconds. If there's a specific part of a video we want to forward to, we'll use the good ol' fast forward button.
Now...the one I come back to again and again is the 10-second rewind button.
Why?
Because I zone out and need to hear what I just missed so I don't get lost.
But is the 10-second button self-perpetuating? Does having it there make me zone out more? Because I know it's an easy fix for catching what I missed?
How would it change if rewind weren't an option at all? Would people's attention get better or would there be rioting in the streets?
Does adapting to shorter attention spans make people's attention spans shorter still?
I don't know the answers to these questions.
But...you can't go wrong practicing paying attention. At least long enough to get through a five-minute YouTube video.
Or a blog post.
