The performances we remember are a conversation of sorts.
An experience where the performer reveals pieces of himself or herself to the audience.
In return, the audience shares its appreciation (or indifference) in the form of applause. And post-performance banter.
In the bigger picture, conversation of any sort is an art. And it's not one that's talked about very much.
After all, how many classes did we take in school that teach us how to be a good conversationalist? How to listen? How to be someone that others enjoy talking with?
The next conversation you have with someone, take some notes. In fact, start by challenging yourself to talk with a stranger. Someone you don't know. That's the first leap into discomfort right there for a lot of people.
Did you listen well? Did you have an impact on the person you were talking with? Even if it was only bringing a smile to their face?
Even if we're not performing, we can make a profound impact on others in as little as one conversation.
