The book Atomic Habits by James Clear contains a brilliant quote.
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.
There's so much contained in those two beautiful sentences.
For example. Say you want to write a book in 2023. That's an awesome goal. It's ambitious. It's exciting. It could change the world.
But...
If you don't have systems that help you with...
- time management.
- maintaining your motivation.
- staying focused.
- improving your writing skills.
...then your goals won't matter.
This happens with piano all the time. Many lessons end with "I will practice every day this week." Only to end up in the land of "I was busy, I only got two days in" when we meet the following week.
A reasonable goal, practicing every day. One every piano student should strive for.
But without systems in place to make sure that effective practice happens, it won't matter.
When it comes to any goals, it's true. You won't rise to them.
But fall to the level of your systems.
And so the best thing you can do for your goals is get working on better systems.
Like...right now.
