The Wonders of Specificity

Instead of saying your project is "good" or "better," try being more specific today.

After practicing today, I can play the first two phrases of my new piece with just the right dynamics I want. Consistently!

or

The edits I made to chapter 5 of my book are much clearer to a reader who has no idea about the work I do.

The same goes for compliments or feedback.

I loved your concert, it was great!

versus...

Great concert! The variety of tone colors in your Beethoven was stunning. And the way you played with accents and voicing in your Prokofiev had me on the edge of my seat.

Whenever you're specific, you're growing, learning, and thinking.

And your compliments and feedback show that you were actually paying attention.

And attention is the greatest compliment of all.
