We often hear the term "off the hook." Usually, it comes with a bit of relief, whatever the situation might be.
One may be off the hook for a project. Off the hook for showing up to an event. Off the hook for being in trouble with someone.
We've all gladly gotten off the hook for a number of things over the years.
But, how often do we seek out opportunities to be on the hook? Now, there's a phrase you don't hear much.
"On the hook."
When you're on the hook, it means you're putting yourself out there for others to see. It all rests with you, for better or for worse. Even if it's uncomfortable or you just don't feel like it that day.
When we create excuses for not practicing or not living to our potential, I believe we are subconsciously taking ourselves off the hook.
"I'm too busy to practice this week" is much easier to say than, "If I try this, it might not work. And if it doesn't work, what does that say about me?"
Excuses take us off the hook for any blame.
Because we tell ourselves a story that it's not our fault. Not our fault that we have kept ourselves from moving forward in new directions.
But, getting off the hook and staying off the hook has consequences in the long term. Dreams not coming true. Projects eternally procrastinated on. Careers being ruined.
However...
Scary as it can be, the world of it might not work can be an exciting one.
Because we learn best through the things that don't work. So long as we have the proper frame of mind. Adjusting and refining every step of the way, especially when things don't go right.
But it starts with putting yourself on the hook.
So, how can you put yourself on the hook today. Even in the smallest way?
Give it a try. Come back and let us know what happens.
