One of my favorite parts of teaching is finding the light switch.
There are many kinds of light switches.
The light switch when a student realizes what she is capable of when she practices every day.
The light switch where we discover that one aspect of music that really excites a student.
The light switch where rhythm suddenly starts to make sense to a student. For no reason other than we kept working on it relentlessly. Sometimes for years until the switch was flipped.
There are light switches everywhere waiting to be discovered. Some make sense, and some appear for no reason at all.
But, the light switch can't be discovered if we stop looking for it.
Stopping would be silly, though.
After all, the search is part of the fun.
