Do you associate the word "homework" with fond childhood memories?
I didn't think so...
Homework is a funny thing. The idea is to reinforce the concepts learned at school. Extra practice, as it were.
But, there are two parts that don't make sense.
First, students have most of the same classes at school every day. Aren't most concepts being reinforced already?
Second, homework is graded most of the time. Does practice count as practice if wrong answers go on your permanent record? How do we learn from failure, then?
Now, here's the irony.
When students take a class outside of school that only meets one day a week, homework makes more sense.
Because without homework, an entire week goes by without reinforcing concepts.
But, when the marks don't count and there are no grades, kids think the idea of homework between classes is ridiculous.
Not all kids, of course. But many.
And so, is homework a helpful practice that reinforces our learning in school?
Or is it a rite of passage? Hoops to jump through because homework is just something we've done for centuries?
Does homework create a love of learning? Or does it turn students off to the concept of a learning practice?
