Instruction Manual Authors

Anyone who thinks teaching is a skill not worth pursuing needs to take a closer look at just about any instruction manual.

It never fails.

Whether it's a child's toy, a piece of furniture, or a new piece of equipment...

The first thought that comes to mind when I look at the instruction manual is, "There must be a shortage of writers of instruction manuals."

And it won't be long before you find me quivering in a fetal position, tearing the instructions to shreds.

Seemingly written by someone whom English was not their first language...and they were also possibly drunk. And they assumed you could read their minds.

An example, from a watch manual:

To set the 1/10 second hand or the 30 minutes timer to zero push button A.

I get it. Some things are hard to explain.

But for sake of all things good, make a YouTube video if it can't easily be put into words!

Whether we're actually teachers or not, we need this skill.

When we assume another person understands just because we put some words together, that's when we get into trouble. When we're stuck with a watch we have no clue how to operate.

The sooner we learn how to teach, the sooner we'll be able to put things together. Whether a piece of furniture, or our relationships.

Otherwise, the metaphorical futon will remain a pile of pieces on the floor.

And nothing makes an apartment sadder than 3-month-old unassembled furniture.
