The Comparison Paradox

"You should be thankful. There are poor children in Africa right now who would kill for what you have."

Everyone's heard the comparison from their parents at some point. But I often thought, "What does Africa have to do with me? Can we send some stuff to them?"

But when we compare ourselves to people who have it better, it's another story. When we want the things someone else has, talk about how wealthy someone else is, or someone else's skill set, we hear the opposite.

"Stop comparing yourself with others."

There's not a right or a wrong answer. It's a matter of which comparisons serve us. Comparing ourselves to someone better can make us feel resentful of the present.

But comparing ourselves to someone better can also inspire us to do better ourselves.

The important part is being able to tell the difference.

  • I told a friend, who came to the recital recently, that I was afraid to participate. “I’ll look like an idiot when all the kids play better than me!!” I told her. She commented, “ Don’t compare urself to those kids!! U do u!!” So I did & although I was terrified, it was a blast!!!
