The Limited Series Phenomenon

Creativity comes with risks. And to become a master creative, one must take calculated risks.

Emphasis on the word calculated.

You don't want to bet the farm on one idea. Nor do you want to take a risk on something that may end your creative journey.

Naked bagpiping could be the next big thing. But try it in a cul-de-sac before taking to the streets of New York City.

The Netflix guys finally caught on with the limited series - A chic term for a one-season TV show with a self-contained plot. Like Clickbait and Maid.

It's a welcome contrast to how most shows are done. You know...the ones that end up with a ridiculous story line for the sake of adding five more seasons.

Or, the ones that are canceled mid-storyline.

Or worse yet, that show that's gone on for years too long. The one that may have been good in the beginning, but became a twisted shadow of its former self. The one you want to take behind the barn and put out of its misery.

Yes, I'm looking at you, Once Upon a Time.

The limited series is the perfect calculated risk.

If it's amazing, then the creators can create another one. Or something similar. Or use all the elements that worked for the next limited series.

If it sucks, there's damage control.

Create, test, get feedback, and have an exit strategy. Do it enough times, and you're bound to create something extraordinary.
