2021 and the Search for Normal

Welcome to our first blog post of 2021!

And our third blog post...pretty much ever.

Thank you for joining us, and looking forward to more adventures together in life and music!

Happy New Year! [insert comment about how rough 2020 was and how 2021 will be so much better here]

A question we have all been hearing a lot since March is, "When can we get back to normal?"

But, upon deep reflection that only a New Year's Day can bring...is normal really the best word for what we want?

Here's a fun list of things that were normal about 30 years ago. If you want a good laugh, explain any of these things to anyone born after 2008 or so. And if you, the reader, were born after 2008 or so, Google it...you'll get a good laugh.

  • Floppy disks
  • 3.5-inch floppy disks (the hard ones...makes sense, right?)
  • The DOS operating system
  • Dial-up internet
  • Movie rental stores
  • Saturday morning cartoons
  • Y2K
  • The walkman
  • Cassette tapes
  • VHS tapes
  • The PDA (portable digital assistant)

While we hold fond nostalgia for some of these things (okay, maybe not so much Y2K...), we aren't exactly going to exchange our iPod for a walkman because we miss the good old days of what used to be normal.

Orchestra concert formats and business models are still clinging to the normal of 200 years ago, which explains the older demographic of those audiences.

We all want to hang out, be able to breathe near one another, and have live performances again - no question about that!

But for most of us, normal leading up to March of 2020 consisted of much of the following:

  • Busy
  • Stressed
  • Tired
  • Financial worries
  • Over-scheduled
  • Lots of time in the car
  • No time to just do nothing
  • Little time to practice

Normal doesn't sound like very much fun, does it?

As creative thinkers, which you are, dear reader - I would like to propose that we leave normal behind. Let's forge ahead into new adventures, where anything is possible...just from six feet away or over the internet for now.

And how about this for a new phrase: "When can we get back together?"

The world will never be more normal than it is right now. Let's take the good of pre-March, the silver linings of the past ten months, let normal go the way of the walkman, and create something new this year.

So, what do you think you will do?
