Find More Bad Ideas

You often hear about "creative blocks" that stop people from creating for months, maybe even years. Writer's block being the most famous one.

Seth Godin has a marvelous take on this in his book The Practice.

Seth writes that there's no such thing as writer's block.

Why?

Well, there's no such thing as plumber's block. There's no such thing as electrician's block. Why should writing be any different? Or any other sort of work?

If you don't have any good ideas, that's okay. Write a bunch of bad ideas. Write enough bad ideas, and inevitably you'll unearth some good ones.

If you don't know what to write, then write anything.

If you're not sure what to practice, then practice anything.

If you don't know what to paint, then paint anything.

If you're not sure how to produce videos, then just start making videos.

Start before you're ready. Do enough of the work, and the rest takes care of itself.

And when in doubt, just come up with some bad ideas to get going.
