Imperfectionism

Perfectionism.

We've all worked with students who had it. And probably suffered from it ourselves from time to time.

That nagging sensation that everything has to be perfect. Otherwise, it's not worth doing at all.

Sometimes I wonder if perfectionism is an issue only because we invented the term "perfectionism."

Kind of like reading about a disease you never heard of, only to start wondering if you have it.

To that end, I think we need to celebrate a new term.

Imperfectionism.

Imperfectionism being an obsession with being imperfect.

Embracing the mistakes.

Knowing there will be falls, spills, scrapes, errors, and the occasional explosion.

Because that's how we improve. And ironically, it's how we get closer to becoming perfect.

Even though perfect doesn't exist. (We also enjoy celebrating double irony around here.)
