Looking Fear in the Face

When we procrastinate on practicing, trying something new, or other projects, it comes down to fear.

Fear of doing something different. Fear of trying something that might fail. Fear of discomfort. The list goes on.

But, have you ever noticed that when you just deal with the thing…it doesn’t end up being as bad as we thought it would?

In our minds, fear is this all-encompassing, scary emotion that we tend to drown in. But when we look straight at it, it runs away.

When we write the fear down, that takes its power away entirely. Because it gives your fear a tangible form to face.

Super Mario World comes to mind. In particular, the ghosts – Boos. You know, the bad guys who chase after Mario when he’s not looking, but freeze when he faces them.

Here’s a short GIF if you need a memory jog, or if you have no idea what I’m talking about. (If you’re reading this in your email, I’m not entirely sure these display properly, so please visit the webpage!)

When we see fear for what it is, we can find a new way forward. And the more we can teach this to our kids, the happier they will be.

Fear will never go away. Which is why dealing with it and even using it to our advantage will become our new superpowers.
