Never Work a Day in Your Life?

We've all heard that saying: If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.

What a load of baloney!

I mean, really...do what you love, and every day is rainbows, unicorns, and radiant bliss? Not so much.

I love the piano. I love music. I love running a music school. But they all require work. Work that isn't always that exciting to do.

As much as I love sounding awesome on the piano, if I could skip the hours, days, weeks, and months of slow practice and repetition work to learn a new piece, I would. But then if it were that easy, everyone would play the piano.

The more accurate phrase would be something like...

Do what you love, and you won't have to work a job that makes you count the minutes until 5pm and yearn for retirement every single day.

Or maybe...

Do what you love, and your work will serve a higher purpose, for yourself and for the world.

Or maybe...

Do what you love, and you have a better chance of finding joy in the work that you're doing.

But the lie the world has told us - Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life - comes with consequences.

Because if we think we shouldn't have to work, then what happens when we feel like we're...working? On something we supposedly love? Does that mean we don't love it after all?

That's where we get confused and fall off the wagon. Whether it be with piano, or anything else.

Whether you do what you love or not, you have to work for it. It's just comes down to a matter of deciding what you're going to work towards.
