When it comes to learning a new skill like music, it takes a lot of discipline. And in our culture of ease and comfort, it's easy to get lazy.
But what about becoming proactively lazy?
You don't hear those two words together often, eh?
Here's what I mean.
When it comes to learning a new piece of music from scratch, it takes a fair bit of will power to get started. Building that momentum. Working out the hard parts.
This is the part most people struggle with. And for myself, I'm all for enjoying the learning process, but I want to get to sounding awesome as soon as possible.
So, I'll find the most efficient way to get through those initial learning stages of a new piece as quickly as I can. Ripping off the Band-Aid, as it were.
And then, I get to be lazy. Not lazy in the traditional sense. But lazy in that I have the notes and rhythms learned. I can focus on other things, like enjoyment and musicality in a piece. I don't have to work as hard.
Same thing when it comes to working out. Being sore for days or weeks on end sucks. But once you build muscle, it gets easier. It starts to become enjoyable.
I don't speak from experience, as you likely guessed, but that's what people tell me.
You know the ripped dude who demos the workouts for your workout video? Does he look like he's working hard at this point?
