There's something special that happens in one-on-one lessons between kids and an adult teacher.
Like in piano lessons.
The kids get to have a true, meaningful relationship with an adult who is not related to them.
School is different.
In a group setting where teachers are expected to meet standards and privacy is necessary, teachers can't get to know students on a personal level.
And so, kids learn to associate adults with authority.
In a classroom, it's hard for teachers to say to any one student...
How is your year going?
What are you struggling with these days?
What can I do to help?
So, the primary connections kids have are with other students, some coaches, and adult family members.
But in a private lesson with a one-on-one teacher, it's different.
As piano teachers, we have the privilege of getting to see our students grow from year to year. And we get to know them on a personal level.
And that's not only cool...but we know it will impact the way our students view teachers for years.
Or at least, we hope it will...
