Routines and Outrage

Here's an interesting phenomenon.

Have you ever noticed that when Netflix raises the monthly bill by one dollar, there's outrage all over the media? You hear the outrage, you hear about people cancelling the service.

It's everywhere.

Yet, insurance has increased rates by hundreds of dollars every year for decades!

I mean, I know insurance is more of a necessity than Netflix. But, where's the outrage over that?

My suspicion is the power of routine.

Insurance premiums have been part of our lives since we were born. It happens every month, and it's something we live with.

Netflix, however, only raises its rates every two or three years. The raising of their rates is neither routine nor expected.

Same thing with kids and school. Children and parents struggle to grasp the idea of practicing the piano 20 minutes every day. Yet, they're okay with 2 hours of homework from school every night.

Same thing. School has been around forever. Music lessons have not.

One could argue that we are defined by our routines these days. For better or worse.

So, which routines will you choose?
