The Skills Behind the Scenes

Know what a jumpcut is?

It’s the film term for when the shot jumps from one scene to another. For example, when two characters are having a conversation, the shot will jump back and forth. Those are jumpcuts.

Jumpcuts are so seamless, we don’t notice them as viewers.

But has it ever occurred to you that there is someone behind the scenes who has to meticulously plan those jumpcuts out?

A skilled filmmaker or editor who needs to figure how the best way to tell the story with jumpcuts…or sometimes without them.

Someone who has studied the psychology of different shots and what those shots will communicate to the audience.

It’s an art form. But one the audience doesn’t notice most of the time.

Given how small the credits are at the end of the movie, these artists don’t get much acknowledgement or credit. But, their work affects our lives every time we sit down to enjoy a movie or show.

It goes to show…skills and art are everywhere. Not just in the grandiose sonorities of the concert hall, but also every time you fire up Netflix.
