The Music Benefits Debate

There’s no question that music learning has major-league benefits for our brains. Most people know that.

But, if this is news to you, please check out our podcast episode with Dr. Anita Collins, author of “The Music Advantage.”

There is an interesting debate in the musical community over whether we should be using this research for advocacy.

On one side is the group holding up this research saying, “See?!? This proves music is valuable. We need this in schools!!”

On the other side is the group saying, “Music learning should be respected for music’s sake, not just because of these other non-music benefits!”

Funny the arguments professions get into, isn’t it?

It’s kind of like the raging debate over whether we should use the term “accompanist” or “collaborative pianist.”

My stance on that one? I quietly laugh at both sides for getting into such a silly argument. They can call me whatever they want, long as I get paid for the gig.

Whichever way you spin it, music is important.

So, let’s stop arguing over the details and start practicing.
