Don’t Think

Before leaving for graduate school, my undergrad piano teacher said something I'll never forget.

"Just practice. You don't have time to doubt yourself, question it, whatever. Just don't think. Practice. You can always regret it later. All that matters right now is that you practice."

It was true. But did I listen as well as I could have? Probably not.

I remember the mornings I would wake up, tired.

Wondering, "Should I practice, or should I get some more rest?"

The irony is, I spent so much time thinking about it, that I didn't do either one - practice or rest.

Most of us have the same struggles in plenty of other areas. Whether it's creative work, or fixing that issue with our computer we think will take all day, but really ends up taking 2 minutes...when we finally do it, that is.

So when in doubt (so long as it's not dangerous), don't think.

Most of the time, you'll be glad you did. (Or didn't...)
