The Magic of Airplane Mode

We're living in Star Trek times. Something my 8-year-old self only saw in movies and read in science fiction books.

We can sit in a Zoom room with people in three different parts of the world.

Through phone, text, and social media, we can keep in touch with everyone we've ever known.

But, it's posed a problem. The problem of being connected to way more people than we're biologically wired to be connected with.

By default, we deal with it by being distracted most of the time. And navigating a shorter and shorter attention span.

But you don't have to settle for that. At least, when you want to focus on a specific project, your practice, or even your friends and family.

It's that magic little switch on your phone that says "airplane mode."

For a beautiful period of time, you can be off the grid. You can't be reached by phone, text, social media, or any other notification.

You're in command of your attention. Not your phone. And you can prioritize the things you want to prioritize.

If you try it, you'll probably feel anxious the first time. It's okay. This is normal.

But when you turn airplane mode off and the incoming messages come through, you'll see.

The world didn't end without you for an hour or two.
